power to the people

We have researched and talked to professionals about biogas and we got more information then needed. We then gathered all the info that was need for our presentation which was a board with our printed out info and pictures. We then got ready for Wednesday which was the day we were presenting. We stood by our board for most of it and tried to answer questions as best as we could. I think presentation day went ok because we didn't have to get up on stage in front of a group of people. But i think that this project didn't really do much for otaki. As these were all only ideas. No one actually completed it and put their ideas into action. Overall i think our group did good.

power to the people

We have found out that you can turn compost into energy by letting it decompose in an airtight container and then use theses gasses to heat classrooms, fuel a gas stove, and can be used to fuel a steam power generator. We only need to put our research on a poster and present. We are almost done and need to work on making a model design. We can use some help from Mrs hirschberg.

power to the people

This week we have found a question and have started researching our topic. we have made great progress so far and have answers to most of our questions. We have found out a way to turn rubbish into energy and how to recycle rubbish in otaki as well as from the ocean. At the moment we need help trying to figure out how to make it clean energy. the next steps for us will be finishing our research.

Elie Wiesel's Holocaust Memoir “Night”

 Elie Wiesel's Holocaust Memoir “Night”

In the Holocaust memoir "Elie Wiesel Night" (non-fiction) Elie Wiesel uses a range of language features to make you feel emotion, and sympathy towards the people in this book. It tells a heartbreaking story of a 15 year old Jewish kid, being sent to a concentration camp. He experienced many traumatic events. His experience changed him, as well as the way he views the world. He would have made this book to help educate others on what happened in the Holocaust, and to hope to prevent it from happening again. In this essay I will point out the use of multiple ellipses, metaphors, sentence structure, and the use of multiple question marks.

One event in this book that impacted me emotionally, is the day that Idek was furious and beat Elie for no good reason. Elie says "He threw himself on me like a wild beast, beating me in the chest, on my head, throwing me to the ground and picking me up again," pg 53 par 1. After Ellie had crawled back to his station the French girl offered him a few encouraging words. "Bite your lips, little brother. . . Don't cry. keep your anger, your hate, for another day, for later. The day will come but not now. . . wait. Clench your teeth and wait. . ." pg 53 par 4. This might not show the significance of these few words, however she risked her life to say this, as the Kapo did not know that she could speak fluent German. Had they known this they might have assumed she was a Jew. She could have been killed. In this text the author used multiple ellipsis to inflect sadness upon the readers. Treating another human being like a dog is not right. It makes me feel terrified seeing as this event could happen again.

Another event that makes great use of repetition to inflict mental harm is when they were going to be forced to leave Buna. It was the last night again. Elie expresses his feelings by saying "It was cold. We got into our bunks. The last night in Buna. Once more, the last night. The last night at home, the last night in the ghetto, the last night in the cattle car, and now, the last night in Buna. How much longer would our lives be lived from one "last night" to the next?" pg 83 par 2. In this quote the author uses repetition, and makes good use of simple, and complex sentence structures. Using these language features at this point in the book sparks compassion for the characters.

The last event that I found to be the most emotionally triggering was when Ellie, and his father were shoved into the barrack, after running from the camp in Buna. Where the dead, and living, combined were piled on top of each other. He could hear a faint voice of someone he remembered. Juliek's voice. The boy from Buna who was a part of the orchestra that played a military march. He cried out from underneath Elie "Mercy!"pg 93 par 2. He begged Elie to stop crushing him, because he was scared his violin would break. The poor kid had run with his violin over 20 km. Elie thought he was a fool to carry an instrument all that way, but those thoughts went silent when he heard the faint sound of a bow gliding over the strings. " A violin in a dark barrack where the dead were piled on top of the living? Who was this madman who played the violin here, at his own grave? Or was this a hallucination?" I love this piece of text as it inflicts sympathy on the reader. The language feature I wanted to point out here is the use of question marks to show how confused, and inflicted Elie is by Juliek’s actions.

I think this book has been written to show and help educate others on how the victims of the Holocaust lived. It shows how they were treated, and why this event should never happen again; to any kind of person. This book is emotionally triggering, and it makes you feel sympathy for the people who were forced to live in a concentration camp. Overall I think that this is a great book to read as it teaches us more, rather than just talking about it.

The Jewish People and the Jewish Religion

The Jewish People and the Jewish Religion

We watched two videos about Judaism (the Jewish Religion) and the Jewish people. Some things I found out were:

- They were forced to wear a yellow star.

- Elie and his people were made to live in a ghetto and later move into a smaller ghetto before leaving for a concentration camp.

- Once they were in the camp they had to have shaved heads.

- the Nazis were mass murderers who would burn babies and leave them in a mass grave.

One thing I thought was interesting was:

I found that the fact that the Nazis only targeted the Jewish people interesting.

I would like to find out more about:

what started this hate towards Jewish people.

Elie Wiesel, Author of Night, Aged 12

Blogpost 2 - Elie Wiesel Aged 12 Your learning blogs are linked from this page on the class website.

Elie Wiesel, Author of Night, Aged 12

Our English class is studying the memoir Night, by Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel. I worked in a group with ella-jaye, elise to create an Empathy Map for Elie at this age.

Take a screenshot of your Empathy Map and paste it here.

Then a short paragraph(s) describing Elie and his life at this time.

Elie is around twelve years old. He is Jewish and extremely religious, he is eager to learn more about his religion. His father says that he should start learning at 30 and not at such a young age because he wouldn't be able to comprehend it. Since his father wouldn't help him with his studies he found his own master in kabbalah who is called Moishe the beadle, who helps him understand more about his religion.

I chose these pictures for this collage because they are my favourite photos and they are meaningful to me. I didn't mean to do multiple pictures of the water, or beach, or the sunset, but those photos seem to appeal to me the most.

I chose those colours because they make me feel relaxed. Like I have no responsibility and do not have to do anything. It makes me feel like I am floating in a body of water with no one around me. I think I like them so much because they remind me of the ocean, and I love the way they can blend together.

I love vines. I like the way they swoop and swirl. I like the way they grow, enveloping the trees and bushes; and when they blossom they look almost supernatural. It is nice to be lost in a forest and come to a clearing and see the vines. They make me feel calm and happy.

I think turtles are interesting creatures. I like the way they glide through the water, like slicing through butter. I love their shells. Their shells are an interesting part of them because it is a part of their bone structure. Turtles are magnificent creatures that live as old as 190 years old, they can also come in a different range of sizes. It is cool to see the way they swim.

My favourite season is summer. It is bright and warm, perfect for swimming, and surfing. It is nice for ice cream and being with friends. I love summer just for the warm waves. It is not freezing cold, and you don’t have to be at home wrapped up in a blanket trying not to be cold.

I like sunset, it is the perfect time to just stop and enjoy the beauty of nature. When the sun sets over Kapiti island it illuminates wherever you are, whether it is trees, the beach, or your backyard. It is a great way to end the day. It is amazing to feel the heat of the sun and see the colours of the sky.

sad joke on a marae

We read the poem ”sad joke on marae″  in English. It was written by Apirana Taylor and tells the story of a Maori man named Tu who has lost his language. He only knows the words tihei mauriora. He doesn't know his pepeha or his history but with the tongue of the tekoteko, who had thrown it down to him, he said that jail is his home, his tribe is beer, and his marae is the pub.

this is a visual representation  of Tu in his home, jail.
